The piece Interpreting BarDem Interpreting follows in the tracks of this long-term work on the origins of speech, based on the Genevan linguist Ferdinand de Saussure’s research on primitive Indo-European languages. It includes, besides the duo, the participation of several simultaneous interpreters.

Its starting point is the sound material recorded during the shooting of the documentary Voicing through Saussure by Véronique Goël (2009), in which the duo, while enacting speech as sound through concrete vocal and articulatory experiments, discusses in conversation the compositional and poetic procedures they employ.

The compositional work on these film sequences, including specific notation and transcription techniques inspired by conversational analysis, results in a new text-score that allows for speech to be performed as a “total sound object”. These are at once moments of conversation and sound objects, which contain, together with the “clear message” carrying the “meaning”, the whole mass of “parasitic” sound events – accents, stutters, sighs, hesitations, misfires, noises…

Peter McCarey, an expert translator for international organizations and a Scottish experimental poet, has drawn the attention of Vincent Barras and Jacques Demierre to the potentially improvisatory dimension of simultaneous interpreting. Thus came the idea to run the text-score through the process of simultaneous translation, where the interpreters are brought to deliver a highly virtuoso performance, which consists in the interpretation of speech – translating speech at the moment of its realization as a sound event.

In Interpreting BarDem Interpreting it is not only the “meaning” but also the “total sound” dimension of the artists’ speech that is at once highlighted and amplified by the work of the interpreters. They translate simultaneously, that is to say in real time, the duo’s performance with the means proper to the “foreign language” – the target language available to them, with their individual skills and choices.

In order to preserve the instantaneous and unique dimension of the performance so that the discovery of speech takes place afresh each time, each performance requires the presence of a new team of four interpreters with different “target-languages”.
The voices are amplified and projected by Thierry Simonot through a set of loudspeakers creating an orchestration that overlaps with the text-score.
Interpreting BarDem Interpreting stages the inescapably concrete and material dimensions of the human activity of speech: broken-down syllables as well as the melodic inflections in the unfolding phrase; prosodic accents, regional intonations and the other physical residues of conversation no less than the fluid elocutions of accomplished discourse. All this emerges as interpreting bardem interpreting tells the tale of a migration through places, languages and bodies.
